Athol Gordon - Partner |

Athol was appointed as a partner in 1999. He specialises in commercial litigation, construction law, medical law, sports and entertainment law. Due to his past experience in criminal law, Athol has also acted as a prosecutor on behalf of public bodies in disciplinary matters. For a number of years Athol served as a consultant lecturer to the Law Societies of South Africa and Unisa as a lecturer in relation to civil procedure.

Paul is a partner in the corporate department in our Cape Town office. He regularly acts as attorney and adviser to one of the leading sports agencies, World Artists (SA) (Pty) Ltd. World Artists represents 70 professional rugby players, of which 18 are Springbok players. Paul also acts for these players in contractual and sponsorship matters. Paul’s work entails, advising and drafting in relation to players’ contracts, sponsorships and the like. Paul also actively advises on the professional sports tournaments.
Lastly, Paul represents a football sports agency which represent many professional South African football players.

Gordon Rushton - Partner |

Gordon was appointed as a partner in 1989. He specialises in commercial litigation, insurance law, construction law, arbitration and municipal law, with forensic investigations being his particular expertise. He conducted a forensic investigation into the shooting of the Guguletu Seven and a decade later was consulted by and assisted investigators of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into the shooting. More recently, Gordon was instructed to assist the Heath Commission in its enquiry into irregularities in the public participation process for the proposed renaming of certain streets in Cape Town, which investigation ultimately led to the dismissal of the mayor of Cape Town. Gordon acted on behalf of a number of the former directors of LeisureNet Ltd in the legal proceedings which flowed from the liquidation of the company. He has considerable experience in High Court litigation and has also litigated in the High Court in London, at the London Court of International Arbitration and in Italy.

Claire Tucker - Partner |

Presently completing a H Dip Company Law at Wits
Claire Tucker is a director at Bowman Gilfillan and the head of the Environment, Mining, Energy and Natural Resources practice area. She presently practises primarily in regulatory and environmental law and is widely published on these matters.
Claire has worked on a wide range of regulatory matters including the drafting of laws and regulations, High Court review applications in respect of decisions on regulatory matters, the interpretation and application of statutes as well as commercial and transactional advice. She practises in and advises on all environmental issues, particularly atmospheric pollution prevention, waste regulation, water, land use planning and environmental impact assessments. Claire has a particular interest in the socio-economic aspects of the constitutional right to a clean environment. Her regulatory areas of specialization include access to information, data protection and privacy, medical and pharmaceutical regulation, food safety and international trade, corporate governance and financial services regulation.
Claire obtained a BA LLB from Wits and an MSc in Law and Development from the London School of Economics. While overseas she worked for two years in London at Leigh Day and Co on plaintiff actions against multinational corporations causing damage to people and environments in developing countries, particularly on the Cape plc asbestos case and the Thor Chemicals case. She also spent half a year at the United Nation’s Food Agricultural Organisation in Rome in the Legal Office researching and advising on international environmental law matters.

Peter Whelan - Partner |

Peter joined Bowman Gilfillan in 1980 and was admitted as a partner in 1983. He specialises in commercial litigation generally, but with specific emphasis on insolvency related matters, workouts and corporate restructuring. He has advised the majority of the country’s financial institutions and has also represented numerous insolvency practitioners and creditors. He has been involved in a number of cross-border insolvency matters involving jurisdictions as diverse as the Isle of Man, the Republic of Ireland, Namibia, Portugal, Uruguay and Japan. Peter also practices in the field of sports law and has represented sports unions and individual sports men and women and their agents in, amongst other things, contract negotiation, disciplinary enquiries and sponsorship agreements. He is a member of several committees, institutions and public bodies, both professional and non professional and holds a number of directorships and is legal advisor to various charitable foundations and trusts.
