The
E-commerce law department of Bowman Gilfillan John & Kernick was established in 1998 in response to the
phenomenal development of E-commerce and its vital role in trade and industry. In the past, legal aspects relating to Information Technology (IT) were handled by various existing departments within the firm. With
IT's rapid growth and its increasing importance in commercial transactions, a decision was taken to create an independent department which would have the necessary expertise to address legalities specific to the application of IT in trade and industry.
Our E-commerce Law department is in a growth phase. At present it comprises of 2 partners in our Midrand and Johannesburg offices. The partners are supported by several qualified attorneys and candidate attorneys. Collectively, this team of IT lawyers offers effective, progressive, and innovative advice to a large and growing number of clients.
OUR APPROACH
We believe that client-partner relationships are crucial. Accordingly, each matter is generally handled by a lead partner. Once the issues are clearly defined, a suitable lawyer or team of lawyers at the appropriate level is assigned to the matter. The lead partner works closely with the client to ensure that there is a mutual understanding of the client's objectives, priorities and expectations.
Our team concept means that lawyers with different legal skills are drawn into a matter as and when required. The lead partner manages and co-ordinates the team, remaining constantly involved and liaising with the client at pivotal stages. The cost factor is at all times taken into account.
OUR CLIENTS
We represent a diverse range of local and foreign clients, from specialist IT companies to private institutions wishing to incorporate IT solutions into their business activities. Our clients include large multi-national listed and non-listed corporations (such as International Internet Service Providers, IT distributors and solution providers, development organizations and private institutions).
