Veronica Cadman - Partner |

Veronica Cadman joined the firm as a senior associate in November 2006 and became a partner on 1 March 2008.
Veronica obtained her BA (French and Law) and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand.
She practiced as a competiiton and corporate lawyer from 2000 - 2003. In December 2003 she joined Gold Fields as a Senior Assistant Legal advisor where she advised on commercial law and corporate governance issues and was also involved in reviewing and advising on agreements with French-speaking African countries (such as Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo).
Veronica returned to practice in November 2004. She has advised on a variety of competition law matters (including advice on prohibited practices, abuse of dominance issues and merger notifications) and has particular experience in advising on competition law matters involving alcaholic beverages, private equity and private healthcare. Veronic speaks French and Spanish fluently.

Tamara is a director in the Corporate Department. She advises on general commercial matters although her practice is focused on competition law. Tamara holds BA, LLB and LLM degrees from the University of Cape Town.
Tamara practiced in the Brussels office of an international firm, where she advised on mergers and joint ventures requiring approval from the European Commission and on prohibited practices investigated by the European competition authorities.
Tamara has advised clients in the energy sector (oil and gas), transport sector (air and rail), financial services sector, the packaging industry, pharmaceutical industry, tobacco industry, airline catering services, health and fitness sector, the food and beverage sector and the motor vehicle industry. Tamara has assisted clients with international mergers requiring notification to African countries outside South Africa and with ensuring compliance with the competition laws of other African countries.
Tamara has represented clients before the South African competition authorities on mergers and acquisitions (including the merger of Nampak and Malbak), as well as abuse of dominance and other prohibited practices (including advising General Motors in the Competition Commission’s investigation into the motor vehicle industry). She has also assisted clients with compliance programmes.
Tamara is a member of the Cape Law Society’s special committee on Competition Law.

Robert Legh - Partner |

Robert Legh is a partner in Bowman Gilfillan’s Corporate Department and is the head of the firm’s Competition and Trade Law practice area. He specialises in competition law, regulatory advice / lobbying and mergers and acquisitions.
In the competition law environment Robert has been involved in a number of merger filings, such as Nampak / Malbak, SAB / Rheem, Bidvest / Paragon and more recently Altech / Namitech and Murray & Roberts / Cementation.
He also advises in restrictive practice and abuse of dominance cases. He advised Standard Bank on competition law issues during Nedcor’s failed takeover bid.
In the regulatory area he has recently been involved in advising the liquor industry in relation to new national and provincial liquor legislation and the Pharmaceutical Task Group, an alliance of multinational and local pharmaceutical companies, in relation to the government’s proposed new pricing regulations for medicines.
In mergers and acquisitions Robert advises a range of multinational and local companies. Recent transactions involved Pretoria Portland Cement’s takeover of Portland Holdings in Zimbabwe and the subsequent listing of PPC on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, Pfizer’s acquisition of Pharmacia and Alcatel’s re-entry into South Africa and its recently announced black empowerment transaction.
Robert is a co-author of the leading text book on competition law in South Africa and is a regular contributor to local and international publications on competition law. He is a member of the Executive Committee of Bowman Gilfillan.

Derek Lotter - Partner |

Derek Lotter has been a Partner with Bowman Gilfillan since 2001, and holds B Comm and LLB degrees and a Masters in Business Leadership.
Derek has been involved in a large number of prominent mergers and behavioural competition matters before the competition authorities in South Africa, and has advised on all aspects of South African competition law.
Derek is currently advising an international airline in the Commission's separate investigations into surcharges in the air cargo and passenger sectors, and a respondent in the complaint referral to the Competition Tribunal against Clover and seven others in the milk sector. Derek is advising a firm in respect of the complaint referral proceedings involving JTI and British American Tobacco SA, and is defending a firm in the mining sector against allegations that it has breached the conditions for the approval of a merger. Derek is advising parties that are the subject of complaint proceedings in the steel, foundry and scrap metal sectors. Derek is currently advising a pharmaceutical company as regards complaint proceedings initiated in the area of HIV/Aids and the supply of antiretrovirals, and a firm as regards the Commission's investigations into the milling and bread sectors.
Derek has extensive experience in a variety of sectors allowing him to advise on the competition law implications of conduct in a number of affected markets. Derek regularly conducts compliance programs and seminars for clients including those with activities in sub-Saharan Africa (such as Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe), and is a regular speaker at conferences in South Africa.

Jean Meijer joined the practice as a partner in 2006. She holds BA and LLB degrees from Rhodes University and an LLM from the University of South Africa.

Lulama Mtanga is a Director at Bowman Gilfillan specialising in competition law. Lulama represents Bowman Gilfillan at the Competition Law Committee, a subcommittee of the Law Society for competition law practitioners.
Before joining Bowman Gilfillan, Lulama was employed by the Competition Commission of South Africa (the “Commission”) for 3 years.

Claire Reidy has been a partner of Bowman Gilfillan since 2001. She holds BA and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Claire has a strong litigation background having practiced general commercial litigation for 12 years. She has handled complex litigation for major blue chip clients of the firm, including matters before the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court. She has also been involved in arbitration and mediation proceedings.
The rapid growth and expansion of the competition practice and the increasing focus of the competition authorities on prosecuting firms in respect of restrictive practices has created a need for additional lawyers in the team with specialised and varied litigation skills and experience. Claire Tucker is a director at Bowman Gilfillan and the head of the Environment, Mining, Energy and Natural Resources practice area. She presently practises primarily in regulatory and environmental law and is widely published on these matters.
Claire has worked on a wide range of regulatory matters including the drafting of laws and regulations, High Court review applications in respect of decisions on regulatory matters, the interpretation and application of statutes as well as commercial and transactional advice. She practises in and advises on all environmental issues, particularly atmospheric pollution prevention, waste regulation, water, land use planning and environmental impact assessments. Claire has a particular interest in the socio-economic aspects of the constitutional right to a clean environment. Her regulatory areas of specialization include access to information, data protection and privacy, medical and pharmaceutical regulation, food safety and international trade, corporate governance and financial services regulation.
Claire obtained a BA LLB from Wits and an MSc in Law and Development from the London School of Economics. While overseas she worked for two years in London at Leigh Day and Co on plaintiff actions against multinational corporations causing damage to people and environments in developing countries, particularly on the Cape plc asbestos case and the Thor Chemicals case. She also spent half a year at the United Nation’s Food Agricultural Organisation in Rome in the Legal Office researching and advising on international environmental law matters.

She holds BA, LLB and LLM degrees from the University of KwaZulu Natal (Durban) and an LLM degree from Duke University School of Law, North Carolina, United States (as the recipient of a World Bank Graduate Scholarship). In 2001-2002, prior to serving articles, Maryanne was a researcher to Justice Albie Sachs at the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
She has general experience in preparing and submitting advisory opinions on areas relating to prohibited practices under the Competition Act, as well as general competition law litigation.

Andrew is a Senior Associate in the Competition Law (Anti Trust) International Trade and Lobbying department. He was admitted as an attorney in April 2006.
Andrew has a wealth of litigation experience - including appearance and advocacy work - and has successfully advanced his clients' interests in various fora and courts – ranging from arbitration tribunals to the Constitutional Court.
He has developed expertise in public law after having obtained a Masters degree in public law (cum laude) from the Université Paul Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence, France and is fluent in French. His clients include national and provincial departments (such as the Department of Home Affairs during its turnaround strategy), provincial legislatures, parastatals, and public interest bodies. As a result he has developed skills ranging from conducting forensic investigations targeting corruption to drafting regulations.

Keith Hendry - Consultant |

Keith is a South African lawyer who attained BA and LLB (cum laude) degrees from the University of Cape Town. Shortly after graduation he took up the post of Lecturer in Law at the University of Birmingham in England. From 1976 - 1985 he lectured, researched and spoke on his specialised fields of European Community Law and European Economic law with a special focus on international trade and the trade relations of the European Community. In addition, he wrote many articles within his area of specialisation, participated in numerous conferences and was a Correspondent to the European Law Review.
In 1985 Keith chose to enter private practice and took up employment with the Brussels office of Coward Chance. Following the merger of Coward Chance and Clifford Turner, Keith became a Partner in Clifford Chance in 1990. Throughout his years with Clifford Chance, Keith specialised in International and especially European Community trade law. This involved in particular a significant participation in EC anti-dumping actions. Other important areas included antisubsidy investigations, GATT / WTO issues and key trade advice on origin issues, customs classification and valuation as well as preferential trade regimes such as free trade agreements. Keith advised clients worldwide inter alia, in Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Australasia, Thailand, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, the USA, the UK and throughout continental Europe.
His clients were generally major corporations and companies but also included industry associations, Governments and governmental organisations. In this time he also spoke widely at international conferences and was regularly recognized by the legal press as a leading practitioner in his field of international and EC trade law and was the Head of Clifford Chance's EC Trade Law Unit.
